Add private TopK index-chain conversion, integer Unsqueeze consumer preparation and a standalone InstanceNormalization rank helper. Part 15/17 depends on part 14; merge the series from the bottom upward. Public registration follows in part 16.
TopK rewrites only a private, standard operator chain with unused values and an exactly proven Reshape/Tile layout. It preserves public/captured results, intentional floating cast rounding, runtime initializer defaults and unsupported schemas. Planning validates all candidate arities before mutation. The replacement uses allocated controls and names, updates index types and shapes, and inserts support nodes without copying unrelated payloads.
Unsqueeze preserves integer data and structural consumers, uses ONNX schema type bindings for consumers already requiring FLOAT, and leaves explicit casts and opaque operators intact. FLOAT repair creates a private view while retaining the original integer owner.
The standalone InstanceNormalization helper preserves input dtypes, attributes and native result rank. It validates unsupported ranks and adapter schemas before mutation, allocates names across existing owners, and declares generated legacy initializer inputs. Zero-sized inputs remain native. This helper stays separate from the ordered pipeline's existing boundary-normalization stage.
The optional runtime test import is bound once at module scope with pytest.importorskip.
Standalone InstanceNormalization validates known rank through the shared metadata-rank helper before checking concrete rewrite dimensions. Unsupported symbolic ranks refuse during preflight, preserving earlier eligible nodes and caller state.
InstanceNormalization parity coverage combines default and nontrivial affine parameters in one parametrized test. Concrete/symbolic late-rank refusal coverage retains the transactional guarantee.
The registered stage selects the prepared four-dimensional TopK layout explicitly.
Testing
Windows CPU: Python 3.10.11, ONNX 1.23.2 and ONNX Runtime 1.22.0. 1,280 tests pass across the complete restacked graph-surgery and public-compatibility suite. All 14 normalization tests pass. Both parity parameters retain shape, structure, epsilon and CPU output assertions; the late unsupported-rank test covers both concrete and symbolic five-dimensional input metadata.
Repository hooks and signed linear histories verify. Tests ran offline; GPU execution, DLA compilation and the complete Linux suite were not run locally. GitHub CI runs separately.
Expanded DLA compatibility for supported 3D InstanceNormalization and TopK patterns, and for integer Unsqueeze outputs used by operators requiring floating-point inputs.
Supported transformations preserve expected output shapes and numerical results, including models containing both 3D and 4D InstanceNormalization.
Bug Fixes
Unsupported or unmatched patterns are left unchanged. Invalid TopK structures and unsupported known tensor ranks now raise errors instead of being rewritten.

Walkthrough
The DLA graph-surgery changes add transforms for rank-3 InstanceNormalization, eligible integer Unsqueeze consumers, and eligible TopK index chains. The compatibility pipeline runs Unsqueeze before Greater and runs TopK after shape inference.
Eligible standard consumers of integer Unsqueeze outputs are redirected to private FLOAT Cast outputs. Tests check redirected consumers and unchanged cases.
TopK index-chain rewrite and pipeline placement modelopt/onnx/graph_surgery/dla_transforms/dla_topk.py, modelopt/onnx/graph_surgery/make_dla_compatible.py, tests/unit/onnx/graph_surgery/dla_transforms/test_dla_topk.py
Eligible TopK index chains are rewritten to use Gather. The rewrite removes intermediate Reshape, Tile, and optional Cast nodes. The pipeline runs Unsqueeze before Greater and TopK after shape inference. Tests check rewrite conditions, output equivalence, and unchanged cases.
The previously reported symbolic-rank rejection gap is addressed, and no actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks.

Explanation
The title "[15/17] DLA TopK and dtype compatibility" names the two main areas of the changeset: the TopK index-chain rewrite (dla_topk.py) and the integer/FLOAT Unsqueeze consumer preparation (dla_unsqueeze.py). The InstanceNormalization rank helper is not named, but the title does not need to cover every detail. The "[15/17]" prefix marks the series position and is not a file list. The wording is specific enough for a reviewer scanning history to identify the primary change.

Reject unsupported ranks even when dimensions are symbolic.
If a rank-5 input has a symbolic dimension, GraphCache.get_shape returns None. This check then misses the known rank, and the transform skips the node instead of raising the documented ValueError. Check the rank from the input’s shape metadata before requiring concrete dimensions for the rewrite. ONNX permits known-rank shapes with symbolic dimensions. (onnx.ai)

Rank preflight now uses _known_rank, independently of whether all dimensions have concrete values. The late five-dimensional normalization regression includes a symbolic batch, checks and executes the valid native graph, and verifies byte-identical caller state on refusal. The symbolic case fails before the fix; all 15 normalization cases now pass.
@mgohil-png The current code addresses this finding. _known_rank reads rank from shape metadata when dimensions are symbolic. The preflight rejects unsupported ranks before mutation.
The regression covers symbolic rank-5 input, native graph execution, and byte-identical caller state after refusal. I inspected the code and test but did not rerun the tests.

current code — reviewers comment on stale diffs, and bot findings (CodeRabbit,

above bots; if a reviewer reaffirms after your pushback, that settles it.

Standalone InstanceNormalization validates known rank through the shared metadata-rank helper before checking concrete rewrite dimensions. Unsupported symbolic ranks refuse during preflight, preserving earlier eligible nodes and caller state.
All 15 standalone normalization cases pass. The late unsupported-rank regression now includes concrete and symbolic batch dimensions, validates and executes the native graph, and requires unchanged caller bytes on refusal. The symbolic case fails against the preceding source; the concrete case continues to pass. Full restacked validation: 1214 passed; required hooks and signed histories verify.

Parametrize the 3D parity cases and remove the standalone rank-5 case.
test_instancenorm_3d_parity and test_instancenorm_3d_nontrivial_scale_bias exercise the same transform and ORT parity path. Keep the second fixture as a parameter because its random scale/bias values are not covered by test_instancenorm_preserves_dtype_epsilon_and_allocated_names, which uses ones and zeros. Parameterize the shape, scale/bias values, and epsilon instead of keeping a separate test.
Remove test_instancenorm_5d_raises. The symbolic=False case of test_instancenorm_late_unsupported_rank_leaves_caller_unchanged already supplies a concrete rank-5 operation, asserts the same ValueError, and additionally verifies that the caller remains unchanged.
This follows the test-curation requirement to use parametrization for near-duplicate tests and remove redundant lower-level coverage.
